First identify what Chrome actually said
“Dangerous,” “suspicious,” “unverified” and “download blocked” are not interchangeable. Record the exact wording and the page address before closing the message. A warning that appears on a copied download page may point to the page or redirect chain; a warning attached to the APK may concern the file reputation. Neither result proves the app is safe or malicious on its own, so the next step is evidence, not guesswork.

A five-minute evidence check
- Open Chrome Downloads and note the filename, file size, time and originating domain without reopening the APK.
- Return to the official-looking page by typing the domain yourself. Do not use an ad, short link or chat forward.
- Confirm that the page names the same Android version, APK release and package. A generic “latest” button gives weak evidence.
- If the publisher supplies SHA-256 or signer information, compare it with the downloaded file using a trusted local tool.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled. A separate Play Protect block is additional evidence to stop and investigate.
Signals that should end the attempt
Delete the download when the domain is misspelled, the file arrives as a ZIP with instructions to enter a password, the page asks for an OTP or screen-sharing access, or the installer name does not match the app you selected. Also stop when every click opens a different domain, the browser claims an urgent security update is required, or the page promises money merely for bypassing the warning. These behaviours do not belong in a normal APK verification path.
What a clean-looking page does not prove
HTTPS protects the connection to the domain; it does not certify the APK’s business model, permissions or code. A familiar logo can be copied, download counts can be invented, and a file can be replaced after a review was written. Stronger evidence comes from a stable publisher domain, consistent release notes, a matching checksum or signer, reasonable permissions and a scan that does not require protection to be turned off.
Example decision
Suppose Chrome warns about teenpatti_update.apk, while the download page lists a versioned file with a different size and no checksum. The page also opens through an advertising redirect. The right result is “not verified”: remove the file and start from the known source page. Clicking through because the app name looks familiar would ignore three independent mismatches.
If you already overrode the warning
Do not enter credentials or payment details. If the APK is not installed, remove it from Downloads. If installed, review the app identity and permissions, run Play Protect, and uninstall it when the package or behaviour is unexpected. Change a reused password through the genuine service only if you entered it into the suspicious app; never pay a third party to “clean” the phone.
